Selective Clearing & Tree Preservation in Charlotte, NC
You need room for a house, a yard, a view, or a building, but you don't want a bare lot. The big white oaks, the hickory by the creek, the poplar that shades the back of the house: those are the trees that make your property worth more than the one down the street.
Selective clearing lets you have both. We clear what your project needs and work carefully around the trees you choose to keep, protecting their trunks and the ground over their roots so they're still standing strong years after the work is done.
- Keepers chosen with you
- Root zones kept off-limits
- Machines worked around trunks

What Our Selective Clearing Process Is
Selective clearing is decided on foot, not from the seat of a machine. These four steps make sure the right trees go and the right ones stay.
-

Choose the Keepers Together
We walk the property with you and pick the trees worth saving based on species, health, and where your project sits.
-
02
Mark Trees and Root Zones
Keepers get bright flagging, and the ground around each one is marked as a no-drive zone for equipment.
-
03
Clear Around Them
We take out the trees and growth your project needs, felling away from keepers and staying off their roots.

How Selective Clearing Saves the Trees That Matter
Selective Clearing Has a Purpose
Selective clearing starts with a project: a house, an addition, a yard, a garden, a view, or a building site. The question is how much has to come out to make room for it and which trees can stay. That's different from cleaning out the brush beneath a canopy or thinning a forest for its health. Here, the clearing is driven by what you're building or using, and preservation shapes how we get there.
Picking Keepers With You
We choose keeper trees together during the walk-through. Good candidates are usually healthy mature hardwoods like white oak, red oak, hickory, and tulip poplar, set far enough from the work area that they won't be crowded by construction. We'll be honest when a tree you love is in a poor spot, is leaning toward where the house will go, or is already in decline. Saving a tree that won't survive the project only delays the cost of removing it.
Roots Matter More Than Trunks
Most of a tree's roots sit in the top layer of soil and spread well past the edge of its branches. A heavy machine driven over that ground compacts the soil, crushes fine roots, and cuts off air and water. The damage isn't obvious at first. A tree can look fine for a season or two and then start dying back from the top. That's why we mark the ground around each keeper as off-limits, plan our travel routes around those zones, and keep equipment, logs, and debris piles out of them.
Working Machines Around Trunks
Clearing near keeper trees is slow, careful work. We fell trees away from keepers, take larger trees down in pieces when there's no safe drop zone, and keep the mulching head and tracks well away from bark. Scraped bark is an open wound that invites decay, so a careless pass with a machine can undo the whole point of preserving the tree. The owner runs the equipment on these jobs, because this is not work to rush.
Why Mature Hardwoods Add Value
A lot with big shade trees around the house usually sells for more and feels finished from day one. Mature hardwoods cool the house in summer, screen neighbors, soak up stormwater on Charlotte's red clay, and give a new home a sense of place that saplings take decades to provide. Replacing a large tree is expensive, and some simply can't be replaced in your lifetime. Keeping them is often the best-value decision in the whole project.
Protecting Keepers After We Leave
Our work protects the trees during clearing, but your builder's crews come next. Ask them to keep vehicles, material drops, and dumpsters off the marked root zones and to keep the flagging in place. On commercial and new development projects, Charlotte's tree ordinance may also require protected areas, and trees in the public right-of-way belong to the city, so confirm any requirements with the city before work begins.

Charlotte Selective Clearing FAQs
What is selective clearing?
Selective clearing removes the trees and growth your project needs gone while keeping the specific trees you choose. It's clearing for a purpose, like a home site or a view, with preservation built into the plan.
How is selective clearing different from underbrush clearing?
Underbrush clearing removes the low growth beneath a canopy and keeps nearly all the big trees. Selective clearing makes room for a project, which usually means removing some larger trees while saving chosen keepers.
Which trees are worth saving?
Healthy, mature hardwoods such as oaks, hickories, and tulip poplars are usually the best keepers, as long as they're not crowded by the new work. We'll walk the property with you and give an honest opinion on each.
How do you keep machines from damaging keeper roots?
We mark the ground around each keeper as a no-drive zone, plan our travel routes around it, and keep logs, mulch piles, and equipment out of it for the entire job.
Can a tree die later even if it looks fine after clearing?
Yes. Root damage from soil compaction can take a season or more to show. That's why protecting the ground over the roots matters as much as avoiding the trunk.
Does selective clearing cost more than clearing everything?
Usually somewhat more per acre, because working around keepers is slower. Many owners find it pays off in property value and in not having to replant shade trees.
Can you take down a large tree near a keeper without hitting it?
In many cases, yes. When there's no safe drop zone, a tree can be taken down in sections instead of felled whole. We'll tell you during the walk-through if a removal is too risky.
Will my builder protect the trees after you're done?
That's up to the builder, so ask them to keep vehicles and materials off the marked root zones. Leaving our flagging in place helps everyone see where not to drive.
Do Charlotte's tree rules affect which trees I can remove?
Charlotte's tree ordinance applies mainly to commercial and new development, and trees in the public right-of-way belong to the city. Confirm with the city before removing any tree near the street or on a development site.
