Stump Grinding & Removal in Charlotte, NC

The tree is gone, but the stump is still there: in the middle of the yard, where the new driveway is supposed to go, or scattered across a lot that was cleared years ago. Stumps trip mowers, sprout new growth, and get in the way of whatever comes next.

We grind stumps below grade across Charlotte, from a single backyard stump to dozens on a cleared lot, and we remove stumps entirely where a driveway, slab, or footing needs solid ground.

  • Ground below grade
  • Full removal where needed
  • One stump or a whole lot

How It Works

What Our Stump Grinding Process Is

Stump work is quick, but it pays to plan it. These four steps make sure every stump is handled the right way for its spot.

  1. 01

    Count and Size the Stumps

We look at each stump's size, location, and what's planned for that spot: lawn, garden, driveway, or building.

  2. 02

    Call 811 and Check Hazards

Utility lines are located before we grind, and we note irrigation, fences, and foundations nearby.

  3. 03

    Grind or Remove

Stumps are ground below grade, or pulled out with major roots where a drive or footing needs solid ground.

  4. 04

    Handle the Grindings

Grindings are raked back into the hole, spread as mulch, or hauled away, as agreed in your scope.

Stump Know-How

What to Know About Stump Grinding in Charlotte

Where Leftover Stumps Come From

Most stumps we grind are left behind after tree removal. A storm-damaged oak came down, a dying pine was cut, or a tree service removed the trunk but didn't grind. Others are left from land clearing years ago, when a lot was cut for timber or opened up and the stumps were never dealt with. On cleared lots around Charlotte, it's common to find dozens of old stumps hidden in weeds, each one a mower hazard and a sprouting point.

How Stump Grinding Works

A stump grinder uses a spinning, toothed wheel to chew the stump into small chips, working from the top down until it's below the surrounding soil. The trunk and the root flare go, while the roots spreading out underground are left to break down over time. Grinding is fast, causes little disturbance to the surrounding lawn, and works well in tight spots. How far below grade we grind depends on what you plan to put there, and we confirm the depth at the walk-through.

What Happens to the Grindings

Grinding a stump turns it into a pile of wood chips and soil, often more than people expect. You have options. The grindings can be raked back into the hole, which settles as it breaks down. They can be spread as mulch around trees and beds. Or we can haul them away and leave the hole ready for topsoil and seed. Grass doesn't grow well in fresh grindings, so if you want lawn back, removing most of them and adding topsoil gives the best result.

Grinding Versus Full Removal

Grinding is the right choice for most lawns, gardens, and landscaped areas. Full removal is different: the stump and its major roots are pulled from the ground, leaving a hole to be backfilled. That's what you want under a new driveway, a slab, a foundation, or footings, where buried wood would rot and leave voids that cause settling and cracks. Full removal causes more disturbance, so we recommend it only where the ground needs to support weight.

Why Some Stumps Sprout

Some trees don't give up when they're cut. Sweetgum, red maple, and several other common species around Charlotte send up shoots from the stump or roots, sometimes for years. Grinding removes the stump and most of the sprouting points, which cuts down regrowth considerably. A few shoots can still come up from roots, and those can be mowed or cut back. If a species is known to sprout, we'll mention it at the walk-through.

Before We Grind: Utilities and Obstacles

Stump grinding goes below the surface, so buried lines matter. Before any grinding, utility lines are marked through North Carolina's 811 service. We also look for irrigation lines, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting, and nearby foundations or fences, since stumps often grow right against them. Let us know about anything buried that 811 won't mark, like private lines to a shed or well.

Questions

Charlotte Stump Grinding FAQs

How deep do you grind stumps?

Below the surrounding grade, with the exact depth set by what you plan to put there, such as lawn, garden bed, or a structure. We confirm the depth for each stump at the walk-through.

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chips the stump down below ground and leaves the roots to decay. Removal pulls out the stump and major roots, which is better under driveways, slabs, and foundations.

Do I need full stump removal for a new driveway?

Usually, yes, for stumps directly under the drive. Buried wood rots and leaves voids that cause dips and cracks. Your driveway contractor may have a preference, and we'll match it.

What do you do with the stump grindings?

We can rake them back into the hole, spread them as mulch, or haul them away. If you want grass to grow there, removing most of the grindings and adding topsoil works best.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

Grinding removes the stump and most sprouting points. Some species, like sweetgum and red maple, may still send up a few shoots from the roots, which can be mowed or cut back.

Do you call 811 before grinding?

Yes. Public utility lines are located through North Carolina 811 before any grinding. Private lines, like irrigation or power to a shed, aren't marked, so let us know where those run.

Can you grind stumps close to my house or fence?

In most cases, yes. Grinders can work close to structures, though we take extra care near foundations and fences. We'll point out any stump that needs a different approach.

How much does stump grinding cost?

It depends on the number of stumps, their size, access, and whether you want grinding or full removal and haul-off. We give a firm written price after seeing them.

Can you grind all the old stumps on a lot that was cleared years ago?

Yes. Cleared lots with many leftover stumps are a common job. We'll locate them, grind them all below grade, and handle the grindings as you prefer.
